As Cars Are Kept Longer, 200,000 Is New 100,000

The New York Times -- HOW far can a modern car really go? Given the increasing age of vehicles on American roads, we may be on the verge of finding out. As a stubborn recession made drivers wary of new purchases for several years, the average age of vehicles on the road in the United States stretched to a record 11.1 years in 2011, according to the research firm R. L. Polk, which tracks vehicle sales and registrations.

Multiply that number of years by the annual miles driven — the E.P.A. uses 15,000 for the cost calculation on fuel economy labels — and it becomes evident that one pearl of conventional wisdom has become outdated.

In the 1960s and ’70s, when odometers typically registered no more than 99,999 miles before returning to all zeros, the idea of keeping a car for more than 100,000 miles was the autom

Pushing 204,000 in my 2002 Buick Regal. Still runs good; have had no major mechanical issues with it. Why even think about buying a new car? When it hits 250K, I will re-evaluate, but if it is still running as good as it is now, probably won't make a change then either.

The most I have put on a car to date is about 170,000 miles, a Volvo and electronics killed it coupled with a leaking rear main bearing seal.

I've had two vehicles over 100K recently and no problems. Funny thing is that they were both GM's.

I would really like a 2013 model, be it the new Ford Fusion or the Chevy Malibu Eco.

My "younger" vehicle is a 2006 Ford Focus Wagon. It has 71K on it, have spent money on maintenance, but zero dollars on repairs. I intend to own it until it isn't worth owning, hopefully that will be 200k.

I don't know about that. I drive my cars until I have an unscheduled maintenance charge, and then it's on to the next. Last time the battery went dead and I traded it in while they were replacing the old one.

Does it matter, these older cars don't do well with the new alternative fuels. Ethanol does horrible things to older engines.

That can't happen! President Obama is planning his entire energy policy on ALL of us buying new "green" cars. Well, we also need to include pond scum (aka Algae) as a large part of his energy policy.

Cars being "worn out" @ 100K miles is 25 year old thought.

Most people tire of them for other reasons, then search for reasons to replace.
