How many of you travel with extra "stuff" in your car all the time? Perhaps some luggage, folders, files, paperwork, clothing, or other items have been in your car for months. To make your dollar go as far as possible, make sure to remove all items that aren't necessary in your car- clean the trunk, keep only necessary items.

All that "dead" weight can reduce your fuel economy 2-5% for each hundred pounds. Maybe there's a stroller or car seat that hasn't been used in months. It'd be a better idea only to haul it when necessary as well because if something were to happen to you, any loose objects may become projectiles and injury you or passengers.



In addition to that, make sure that when you do haul extra items...

Walk around most parking lots and just take a look in the cars...there are very few that are clean on the inside...most have crap throughout...how about this...loose those 30-50lbs from yourself first and then see how that helps...

I read this story about 2 weeks ago. I went out and took out way too much weight out of my little chevy pickup and my car too. I'm waiting for the savings. Oh well.

Good point; I have carried excess "stuff" in my car in the past; but I do not believe it weighed 100 lbs. I have a RAV 4 and carry the spare on the back door of my vehicle. I bet that affects my mileage but the trade off is being w/o a spare.

I have contemplated removing it for driving around town; but I believe I would carry it on any out of town trip.

I understand new vehicles are not even equipped with a spare trying to reduce weight and increase mileage as being enforced on the auto industry.
