I've heard 55mph was the breaking point where you burned more gas. Anyone remember when the tractor trailers were traveling in caravans when they dropped the speed limit to 55mph to save gas?

I can agree with Bluebird333,with fuel prices climbing again, backing off the go pedel would be the first sensible brain wave suggestion to save or gain better mileage.
Keeping a greater distance between the vehicle leading you and your vehicle makes sence for less braking of useful energy already in motion.Brake repair like most other costs are not cheap, but more complex on modern vehicles,to be done right.
Ask yourself when you put that ignition key into the switch; " How can I drive today to make someone else richer with my habits".......? HMmmm.... Answer your question!

If you have to use your brake on the interstate, you were just using too much gas!

The key to saving fuels is coasting......you'd be surprised at the improved mpg.....but it does take practice and awareness.

If everyone followed the guidelines outlined here: even speeds, plenty of room between cars, etc., we would have very few traffic jams as well.

I can set my cruise at 55 on the highway and stay in the right lane. Get about 25 mpg and watch everyone go by between 60 and 80 mph, and catch most if not all of them when the cops have them stopped or when I get to town where everyone gets the red light.

Put some more reasonable distance ahead between your vehicle and the one your following, then you can stay off the brake every few seconds.Often a vehicle will move into that gap ahead, ease off the go pedel, resume, rather let them tailgate, most turn off right anyway, and that gap returns, works for me....pertaining to fuel savings.

Cruise control actually uses more gas on rolling hills due to up and down shifting. It does work best on flat terrain however. Drive like there is an egg under the gas pedal.

I can get in my truck and do the maximum posted speed and get between 13 and 17 mpg, or I can set the cruise at 55 and get between 25 and 25. I'll do the 55. In the wife's car at the posted limit it will get around 30-31, but at 55 it will get 39-41 mpg. Big difference no matter how you look at it.

Sometimes easier said than done. Tailgating, passing on the right, being cut off and getting finger are all frequent consequences in SoCal freeways, even at 65-70MPH

Fast / slow - the big difference in mileage is consistency.
The upside of jack rabbiting and nose braking is that they are great ways to keep your gas lines & tanks cleaned of all sludge due to the high velocity of the fuel moving through them.
Your money - your call.

Seems to me on the newer design vehicles that a readout indicator, which would record each run time intervail;> with the drivers brake application time in seconds VS accelerator application time in seconds, recording untill the engine is shut off/restarted.
Saying this info for speeds under 50 mph.might just help drivers change their hsbits for improvement of fuel savings on non hybrid vehicles. The read-out if displaded only after each engine shut off, with those seconds comparisons to the driver, might challange them for improved driving habits.
Thinking so.....

Since early Spring I have noticed many drivers doing more of the rushing up to red traffic lights, stopping hard, then texting or reading text, while being stopped at the lights. Often the vehicle behind on green, those drivers blow their horns, causing a rage scenerio,or otherwise disgrunted, then reckless outcome on start away.
Gas savings fly out the tailpipes, but do they care, the timeing is more important related to the sending of messages, brake linings are also secondary, but extra horn usage seems to avail the increase of B...Bat sales.
This trend seems to be growing in the minds of determined texting drivers as a safer way to daily Get Err Done. Sorry, nightly also! When multiple horns blow the severity of a rage incident is nill, rather the guilty one readily accepts it as a goof-up or just one more of many to come along.
Cheer up, those long red lights aren't all that bad for this trend of safer texting,I'm sure you can afford it! HAGDay!

hello Titanic1985, the PA Turnpike is still a challenge they should have lowered the speed limit instead of raiseing it to 70 mph.

Hello W707. A bit off topic, but I lived in Pennsylvania & later Virginia. Driving the turnpike at the slower speed limits was a challenge, especially during holidays. I can't imagine 70 MPH unless PENDOT has greatly improved the roadways.
Back to saving gas :-) .

Hello PassmyGas. I have a question, what does "slowly" imply? As GBs on this Thread have said, there is a point where you become a danger to yourself and others. Keeping your vehicle properly maintained is a starter. Learn about your vehicle by observing and/or recording you MPGs. Each vehicle has different characteristics, designed for a certain function (e.g. light trucks, cars, SUVs, etc.). That said find out where you vehicle gets acceptable mileage. My Chevrolet Equinox 6 cylinder gets it's best mileage at 65 MPH which is 5 MPH under the posted limit of 70 MPH. The penalty for driving the extra speed is .5 MPG. I stay in the right lane and drive, when possible in off peak traffic hours. When driving use common sense when braking and accelerating. I know this sounds radical, but if everything other GBs and myself has said is being done and you don't achieve the MPG desired, seek out another vehicle. Bear in mind, however, those windows stickers are often in error (both ways). My Chevy is rated at 17/24, but always gets at least 24.7 to 28.1 MPG. Other vehicles go the other way. Take care :-).

I usually try to coast to a stop when coming to an intersection with a red stop light. I don't drive aggressively since it has been proven that aggressive driving wastes gas the most.

I drive maybe 30 mins to work and back each day - thats about it. So these suggestions are fairly irrelevant unless I am looking to save a thimbleful of gas. I stick to the traffic patterns and don't drive usually 10 over the speed limit.
